A Developer’s Guide to Data Modeling for SQL Server: Covering SQL Server 2005 and 2008

Almost every IT project involves data storage of some kind, and for most that means a relational database management system (RDBMS). This book is written for a database-centric audience (database modelers, architects, designers, developers, etc.). The authors do a great job of showing us how to take a project from its initial stages of requirements gathering all the way through to implementation. Along the way we learn how to handle some of the real-world design issues that typically surface as we go through the process.

Java Reflection in Action

Explaining the Java Reflection API and providing techniques for using it successfully, this guide describes the capabilities that allow a program to examine and modify itself at runtime. The book examines the java.lang.reflect package, explains how you can benefit from its use, and includes a detailed discussion of Java’s dynamic proxy facility. The authors also address less obvious reflective capabilities, such as call stack introspection and the Java class loader. You’ll learn the various ways to use Reflection to generate code and work around the API’s limitations. The book also focuses on performance analysis techniques as well as patterns, and features a peek at what’s new in JDK 1.5. The book begins with simple, teachable examples that allow you to observe the concepts in action and then progresses to more complex examples that relate to problems programmers encounter every day. The authors provide valuable insight into how you can easily solve these problems using Reflection.

X3D: Extensible 3D Graphics for Web Authors

X3D: Extensible 3D Graphics for Web Authors

X3D: Extensible 3D Graphics for Web Authors

Product Description
In the early days of the Web a need was recognized for a language to display 3D objects through a browser. An HTML-like language, VRML, was proposed in 1994 and became the standard for describing interactive 3D objects and worlds on the Web. 3D Web courses were started, several best-selling books were published, and VRML continues to be used today.

However VRML, because it was based on HTML, is a stodgy language that is not easy to incorporate with other applications and has been difficult to add features to. Meanwhile, applications for interactive 3D graphics have been exploding in areas such as medicine, science, industry, and entertainment. There is a strong need for a set of modern Web-based technologies, applied within a standard extensible framework, to enable a new generation of modeling & simulation applications to emerge, develop, and interoperate. X3D is the next generation open standard for 3D on the web. It is the result of several years of development by the Web 3D Consortium’s X3D Task Group. Instead of a large monolithic specification (like VRML), which requires full adoption for compliance, X3D is a component-based architecture that can support applications ranging from a simple non-interactive animation to the latest streaming or rendering applications. X3D replaces VRML, but also provides compatibility with existing VRML content and browsers. Don Brutzman organized the first symposium on VRML and is playing a similar role with X3D; he is a founding member of the consortium. Len Daly is a professional member of the consortium and both Len and Don have been involved with the development of the standard from the start.

* The first book on the new way to present interactive 3D content over the Web, written by two of the designers of the standard
* Plentiful illustrations and screen shots in the full color text
* Companion website with extensive content, including the X3D specification, sample code and applications, content creation tools, and demos of compatible Web browsers

e-Business in Construction

Chimay J. Anumba, Kirti Ruikar, “e-Business in Construction”
Wiley-Blackwell | 2008-08-25 | ISBN: 1405182342 | 304 pages | PDF | 2,5 MB

With a number of disparate, often geographically distributed, organisations involved in the delivery of construction projects, there has been considerable interest in e-business tools within the construction industry. These tools open up a range of possibilities for the industry to rethink existing processes and working methods, so their use is increasingly common. Nevertheless, there has been little definitive guidance for practitioners, researchers and students on the major issues in electronic business from a construction perspective.

By bringing together 16 contributions from research and industry covering theory, technological issues, practical implementation and legal matters, and illustrated with a number of case studies, e-Business in Construction fills that gap. Starting with the theoretical aspects of e-commerce and moving on to consider the specifics of the construction context, it includes a mechanism for the assessment of the e-readiness of construction sector organisations. The middle part of the book focuses on the role of various technologies in e-business, with examples included as appropriate. This is followed by a discussion of practical, legal and trust issues. The potential of next generation of information and communication technologies is also addressed.

With a fine blend of theoretical and practical aspects of e-commerce in construction, and well illustrated with a number of industrial case studies, e-Business in Construction will find an appreciative audience of construction practitioners, researchers and students at all levels.

The 2009-2014 World Outlook for Mobile Phone Devices

Icon Group International, Inc., “The 2009-2014 World Outlook for Mobile Phone Devices”
Icon Group International, Incorporated | 2008-09-01 | ISBN: 0497839229 | 187 pages | PDF | 1 MB

This econometric study covers the world outlook for mobile phone devices across more than 200 countries. For each year reported, estimates are given for the latent demand, or potential industry earnings (P.I.E.), for the country in question (in millions of U.S. dollars), the percent share the country is of the region and of the globe. These comparative benchmarks allow the reader to quickly gauge a country vis-a-vis others. Using econometric models which project fundamental economic dynamics within each country and across countries, latent demand estimates are created. This report does not discuss the specific players in the market serving the latent demand, nor specific details at the product level. The study also does not consider short-term cyclicalities that might affect realized sales. The study, therefore, is strategic in nature, taking an aggregate and long-run view, irrespective of the players or products involved. This study does not report actual sales data (which are simply unavailable, in a comparable or consistent manner in virtually all of the 230 countries of the world). This study gives, however, my estimates for the worldwide latent demand, or the P.I.E. for mobile phone devices. It also shows how the P.I.E. is divided across the world's regional and national markets. For each country, I also show my estimates of how the P.I.E. grows over time (positive or negative growth). In order to make these estimates, a multi-stage methodology was employed that is often taught in courses on international strategic planning at graduate schools of business.

Who Controls the Internet?: Illusions of a Borderless World

Who Controls the Internet?: Illusions of a Borderless World

Who Controls the Internet?: Illusions of a Borderless World

Description: In this provocative new book, Jack Goldsmith and Tim Wu tell the fascinating story of the Internet’s challenge to governmental rule in the 1990s, and the ensuing battles with governments around the world. It’s a book about the fate of one idea–that the Internet might liberate us forever from government, borders, and even our physical selves. We learn of Google’s struggles with the French government and Yahoo’s capitulation to the Chinese regime; of how the European Union sets privacy standards on the Net for the entire world; and of eBay’s struggles with fraud and how it slowly learned to trust the FBI. In a decade of events, the original vision was uprooted, as governments time and time again asserted their power to direct the future of the Internet. The destiny of the Internet over the next decades, argue Goldsmith and Wu, will reflect the interests of powerful nations and the conflicts within and between them.

Well written and filled with fascinating examples, this is a work that is bound to stir heated debate in the cyberspace community.

“A timely look at the ways that governments make themselves felt in cyberspace. Goldsmith and Wu cover a range of controversies, from domain-name disputes to online poker and porn to political censorship. Their judgments are well worth attending.”
–David Robinson, Wall Street Journal

“In the 1990s the Internet was greeted as the New New Thing: It would erase national borders, give rise to communal societies that invented their own rules, undermine the power of governments. In this splendidly argued book, Jack Goldsmith and Tim Wu explain why these early assumptions were mostly wrong. By turns provocative and colorful…an essential read.”
–Sebastian Mallaby, Editorial Writer and Columnist, The Washington Post

Nurses and other public health practitioners have a crucial role to play in helping to improve the collective well being of society and so developing skills in public health - preventing disease, prolonging life and promoting health - is key to this process. Within the four sections of the book, the text is organised around the ten core public health skills outlined in the National Occupational Standards for the practice of public health, covering skills including surveillance and assessment, collaborative working, working with communities, strategy development, risk management, leadership and ethics.
